Research and ethics Responsible research is part of the design from the beginning.

THRIVE applies data protection by design. This includes data-protection impact assessments, secure storage, access controls, documented retention and deletion arrangements, and procedures for responding to incidents.

Research data and materials will be made openly available only when this is ethical, lawful and compatible with participant privacy.

THRIVE follows the principle: as open as possible, as protected as necessary.

Study overview

Approximately 4,000 adolescents aged 14–16 in at least 30 schools across seven countries. The study combines surveys, guided reflections, school input, co-design and controlled evaluation of two AI-supported approaches.

Our commitments

Participation is voluntary

Before taking part, young people and, where required, their parents or guardians receive clear information about the activity. Participation follows the approved consent and assent procedures in each country.

Privacy is built into the research

THRIVE collects only the information needed for the study. Research data are pseudonymised, securely stored and accessible only to authorised people for approved purposes.

Safety comes first

Safeguarding procedures, trained research teams and clear routes for raising questions or concerns are in place before fieldwork begins.

Young people are treated with respect

THRIVE takes adolescents’ experiences, developmental needs and different circumstances seriously. Young people also contribute to the design and review of selected research activities.

Inclusion and fairness matter

The research considers differences related to gender, socio-economic circumstances, disability and access to technology. THRIVE examines whether its methods and tools work fairly across different groups and countries.

People remain responsible

AI-supported features are designed with human oversight. THRIVE assesses their safety, fairness and suitability for use with adolescents and provides routes to human support where needed.

Who oversees the research?

THRIVE’s ethics and compliance arrangements include:
– national and institutional research approvals;
– an independent Ethics Board;
– a Fieldwork Oversight Group;
– safeguarding and data-protection procedures;
– responsible-AI reviews and fairness assessments;
– regular compliance monitoring and incident-response procedures.
