How THRIVE works
Capture
We gather cross-country evidence from young people aged 14–16 in participating schools. Surveys and guided reflections are complemented by input from teachers and school leaders. This allows us understand digital practices in context, including differences in school environments, access and personal circumstances.
Understand
Researchers examine patterns in the data and in young people’s reflections. The goal is to identify what supports or disrupts self-regulated learning and emotional well-being, for whom, and under which conditions. Findings are used to inform the design of practical interventions.
Empower
THRIVE co-designs, implements and evaluates two AI-supported reflective approaches: intelligent tutoring and adaptive feedback. These approaches are embedded in ORBITA and tested through a cluster-randomised trial in schools. Evidence from the project is used to inform the AdWell framework, national playbooks and policy guidance.
Scale
Validated results are shared through open resources, teacher training, policy dialogue and E-well+ Connect. The aim is to help schools and organisations adapt and reuse the results while keeping the evidence, ethics and local context visible.
What we examine
- How different digital activities relate to attention, reflection, learning strategies and emotions.
- How purpose, timing, social setting and school context change the experience of technology use.
- How young people understand their own digital practices.
- Whether guided reflection and AI-supported feedback can strengthen self-regulated learning and well-being.
- How approaches can remain inclusive, safe, practical and adaptable across countries and schools.
